SafeWork Australia is currently developing national model WHS legislation, which the Commonwealth and each State and Territory will implement by the end of 2011. The Draft Model Legislation is available from SafeWork Australia.
On 26 May 2011 Queensland Parliament became the first to pass the Workplace Health and Safety Act 2011
Timeline – National harmonisation
- December 2009 Model OHS legislation submitted to Workplace Relations Ministers – Council (WRMC) for agreement.
- April 2011 Public comment period closes for the model Work Health and Safety Regulations and priority model Codes of Practice.
- June 2011 Safe Work Australia to agree to model WHS Regulations package.
- June 2011 Workplace Relations Ministers’ Council to approve model WHS Regulations package.
- January 2012 Commencement of the Work Health and Safety Act and WHS Regulations.
